The FAS Workstation

Rapid growth in the photonics industry has led to the need for high volume manufacturing of optical fiber components and systems. Current manufacturing methods are very labor intensive and require a high level of operator dexterity to perform repetitive precision operations. The automation of these precision operations would significantly improve the speed, efficiency, quality and cost of optical fiber assemblies. Vytran LLC now makes this possible, with the introduction of the FAS, or Fiber Automation System.

The FAS consists of a flexible workstation platform that can be configured with various "toolbox" modules into a fully automated, high-volume manufacturing system. Because optical fiber fusion splicing is one of the most common and critical manufacturing requirements of many optical assemblies, Vytran initially offers the FAS as a fully automated splicing workstation for single mode and PM fiber. This system is configured with modules for coating removal, fiber cleaving, fusion splicing, recoating and proof testing. The entire splice process is performed automatically in under 2 minutes. Not only is the process fast and consistent, but the operator is now free to perform other assembly tasks during the splice process. Vytran will soon offer a pallet based automated fiber feeding module that will sequentially process up to 12 fibers on the FAS, all without operator intervention.
